Armoires Glossary and Important Terms

Terms and Definitions - Armoires Glossary

When looking for an armoire, you need to know what your options are. The best way to understand those options is to understand the terms associated with armoires. In this glossary you’ll find all the terms and definitions you need to buy a new armoire.

Armoire: An armoire is a type of large cabinet or wardrobe that was traditionally used to store clothing. Inside there is usually space to hang clothing, similar to a closet, along with shelves and/or drawers, and outside there are two doors to cover what’s inside. Armoires are now used in a variety of ways: as entertainment centers, as computer desks and storage, and as jewelry storage.

Wardrobe: A wardrobe is another word for an armoire, but refers only to those used to store clothing. Wardrobes are often used in apartments or homes that don’t have a lot of built-in closets or storage space.

TV Armoire: A TV armoire is very similar to an entertainment center and is used to store your television, as well as any other media equipment and accessories you may have. The benefit of a TV armoire is that the doors, when closed, will hide the television and everything else in the armoire. Your TV no longer has to be the focal point of your room and you can hide any clutter.

Entertainment Center: An entertainment center, like a TV armoire, holds your television and media equipment. The difference between the two is that an entertainment center may not necessarily have doors. Entertainment centers come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and styles, and can either show off your television or help it blend into the overall design of your room.

Jewelry Armoire: A jewelry armoire is usually smaller than a typical armoire and is specifically built to hold jewelry. This may include special lining to protect the jewelry, a variety of hooks for necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, and cushions to store rings. Many jewelry armoires also have locks keep your jewelry safe.

Hardware: Hardware refers to any of the handles or knobs on an armoire used to open drawers or doors. These handles are important to the overall style of an armoire and can add the final touch. Hardware is often made out of metal, wood, or plastic, depending on the material of the rest of the armoire.

Computer Armoire: Another type of armoire you may come across is the computer armoire. This is a convenient way to store a computer and all of your computer accessories, while also functioning as a desk. At the end of the day you can turn off your computer, close the doors, and hide your work within a beautiful piece of furniture.

Cabinet: The term “cabinet” refers to any piece of furniture that is used as storage and has shelves and doors. This could be an armoire, but it could also be your kitchen cupboards or your entertainment center.

Contemporary Armoire: Contemporary is a specific style of armoire that looks more modern than traditional or antique furniture. It is recognizable by its clean lines and lack of decorative elements, such as carving in the wood and elaborate hardware.

Traditional Armoire: A traditional armoire is more likely to have decorative elements, curved lines, and legs. Some traditional pieces are reproductions of antiques or are genuine antiques.

MDF: MDF is an alternative to wood that is made from wood fibers and is commonly used for furniture. It can make your armoire lighter and more affordable than actual wood.
