A popular use for an armoire these days is as an entertainment center. What Type Do You Want - Armoires Buying Guide
The very first thing to consider when looking for armoires is what you need the armoire for. There are several different types of armoires, and if you don’t have an idea of what you need one for, you’ll be overwhelmed by all of the options available.
Your Basic Wardrobe
Historically, an armoire was a large cabinet to store armor, but because of its usefulness, the armoire began to be used to store any number of items. The most common use of an armoire is for clothing and this type of armoire is often called a wardrobe. For those who live in older homes or apartments without built-in closets, a wardrobe is a great replacement for a closet and is perfect for storage.
Armoires as Cupboards or Cabinets
Another common use for an armoire is as a cupboard or extra storage in the kitchen. This allows you to store plates, glasses, pots, pans, and more. It can also be used as a pantry to store food. These armoires tend to have more shelves and drawers, while a wardrobe allows more space and a bar for hanging clothing.
Armoires as Entertainment Centers
Armoires aren’t just for clothes anymore. Because of their size, their ability to store many items, and doors to hide any resulting clutter, they are now being used in a variety of ways. A popular use for an armoire these days is as an entertainment center. Many armoires are being built specifically to hold your television, your DVD players, your video game consoles, and all of your media accessories. Known as TV armoires, they can easily hide your TV behind closed doors until you are ready to watch it.
Armoires as Your Office
Yes, an armoire can actually function as an office, or at least part of an office. Some armoires are now being built with your computer in mind. Open the doors and there is a space for your computer, drawers to store office supplies, and even space for a printer. Many have a fold out panel that can function as a desk. A computer armoire is a great space saver: when you’re done working, all of you have to do is put away your computer, close the doors, and your office is now hidden.
Where Is Your Armoire Going to Be?
If you know what type of armoire you need, then you probably already know which room of your house it is going to be placed in. That room will play an important factor in the specific armoire you eventually end up buying.
Size of the Room
First and foremost is the size of the room in relation to the size of the armoire. If the armoire is for a child’s room, then you’ll probably want to look at smaller armoires, as well as ones specifically made for children. Regardless, it is always smart to measure the room and to get the exact measurements of the armoire you are considering. If you are using the armoire as an entertainment center or for your computer, you also need to measure the space inside the armoire to confirm that your items, such as a television, will actually fit inside.
Placement in the Room
Another thing to consider is where in the room the armoire will be going. If you have a large room, but that room is already filled with large furniture, you may not be able to get the largest armoire. Consider the size of the furniture you already have, as well as how the armoire will fit in with that furniture, to make sure the armoire is proportionate to both the room and the other furniture.
What Style Do You Want?
An armoire can be modern or it can be an antique. It can also be red, pink, white, or stained in beautiful cherry wood tones. Your options for style are endless, so know what you want before you shop. Again, you’ll need to consider the room you’ve chosen for the armoire. If your décor is very traditional and in neutral tones, that very contemporary, bright orange armoire may not be right for you.
Materials Affect Style Too
A large part of the color or style of a piece of furniture is based on the material it is made out of. Armoires made out of wood will most likely have brown or reddish tones that will fit in with the décor of most homes. How that wood is carved, however, can drastically change the style. Armoires can also be made out of plastic, MDF, glass, metal, or any other highly durable material.
Now that you’ve read the guide, you can start shopping for a new armoire for your home.
